Caltagirone / B
Qal’at al Ghiran, which means something like “Castle of Vases” in Arabic, is the ancient toponym from which the name Caltagirone derives and evidence of just how deep-rooted and storied the ceramic tradition here is. And ceramics, a protean and incredibly fascinating material since the dawn of time, is the source of inspiration for one of projects developed by Not.O.
The Caltagirone family of containers appropriates this age-old craftsmanship, distancing it from its usual decorative context and pointing it in the direction of Italian artistic culture, which is more tangible and expressionist and less decorative, featuring workmanship that recalls some of the art by Lucio Fontana or Fausto Melotti.
The Caltagirone sideboard is brought to life by the aggregation of simple volumes adorned with individually hand-moulded ceramic tiles fixed to each individual door panel, resulting in a completely decorated front.
The lacquered wood structure is divided internally into compartments and drawers so that the sideboard can be used either in day or night areas.
An important object, a unique presence, and a piece of furniture that reaches out to the world of contemporary art, while remaining anchored in one of Sicily’s most deeply rooted craft traditions.
