Avola / A
A Greek fret or meander is a decorative border, consisting of a continuous line folded to form a repeating pattern frequently seen on archaeological finds in Sicily from both the Greek and Roman periods.
The Avola family of containers re-appropriates this element and transforms it into a hypnotic pattern, repeated in a sequence that alternates between colour and black and white.
The decoration is silk-screened on glass and covers both the cabinet’s frame and doors. This choice of surface finish is also inspired by tradition: verre paint, dating back to the XVI century, is very common in Sicilian popular culture, in which reverse glass paintings are the miracles and sacred apparitions of a divinity breaking through into everyday life.
Everything in Avola is decoration, even the base, which is in keeping with the ornamental language of this piece and characterises its precious uniqueness.
